Graduate Assistant Information

The Career Exploration graduate assistant provides a valuable service to the center by supervising and training paraprofessional undergraduate student volunteers and work study students, overseeing our outreach program and completing various administrative tasks.

The Career Exploration GA will work an average of 20 hours per week. The majority of these hours will be spent in the Career Exploration Office providing career guidance to undeclared students, and supervising and mentoring volunteers. Some of these hours will be spent presenting to various clubs, classes and student organizations. One hour will be a staff meeting and one hour will be a supervisors meeting.

The graduate assistant is expected to assist in our summer training retreat which is held on the Friday and Saturday after Fall classes begin. The graduate assistant is also expected to familiarize him/herself with Career Exploration before the training retreat by spending time in the Career Exploration Office with a senior staff member.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide career counseling to students who are undecided about their major and career path
  • Administer and interpret advanced self assessment inventories including Cambell Interest and Skills Survey
  • Assist in Pre-Semester Fall Training (if beginning assistantship in the Fall)
  • Supervision of 8-10 undergraduate paraprofessional career guides
  • Assist in on-going training with volunteers
  • Serve as a mentor to volunteers
  • Provide feedback and evaluation to volunteers
  • Supervise volunteer projects
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct outreaches to residence halls, clubs, classes and organizations
  • Coordinate class assignments with First Year Seminar, Life and Career Planning, English Composition and any other classes
  • Plan and run staff meetings
  • Record staff meeting minutes
  • Serve as a liaison to other departments on campus
  • Schedule guest speakers
  • Plan teambuilding activities
  • Supervise work study students
  • Assist in outreaches after hours
  • Assist in campus outreach events-club expo, open house, etc.,
  • Assist in volunteer recruitment
  • Other duties/special projects as assigned
